Garden of Roses

saturday was the second last day of Luminato, and as i mentioned in a previous post, i really wanted to check out Denis Gagnon's piece, sponsored by Lancôme. the dressed weighs about 25 lbs and much of the material was sourced in Paris. beginning his career in costume design, Gagnon has been in the industry for over a decade and his signature style is unmatched. this is a breathtaking piece, that to me, is so stunning would almost be a mortal sin to put it on! this is a piece of art that is for display only.

last year i had been blown away by his spring/summer 2011 show at LGFW when i saw it for an assignment. and last year he was the very first canadian designer featured at La Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal. Gagnon is famous for his use of leather, lace and chain. there is no doubt that this dress could have been an additional piece to the collection. he loves fringe and hardware and draping. every garment is consistent in theme but has it's own interpretation, it's own freshness and surprise. the photos from the show were taken by my friend Evania from ELV.

i follow both denis gagnon and jeanne beker (who wears his deisgns) on twitter, and i pretty much witnessed them making dinner plans together before the Luminato launch and i must say, having a personal friendship and the support/fandom of the famous FTV host kind of makes you legit. i really hope this inspires people to check out canadian fashion. canada is not just the dsquared2 jeans madonna wore in the don't tell me video. alot of our designers like Mark Fast, Erdem and Jeremy Laing have had great success internationally, so i hope we start getting recognized a little more for what we do. there's amazing talent in our own backyard!

June 18, 2011

yesterday was such a phenomenal day downtown toronto. there were so many different things going on in the city, it would be really hard for anyone to keep up with all of them. my boyfriend and i went for a stroll on Queen Street to check out the Topshop pop up store and on the way i happened to catch Lady Gaga's rehearsal for the MMVAs! i got a little bit excited because i haven't had the opportunity to see her live before, so it was a thrill for me, even though Gaga, close-lipped, just held the mic in front of her while they ran through the dance.

we also got to check out Luminato before meeting up with some friends. if you didn't read what i was most excited for, check it out here and look forward to seeing my shots in an upcoming post. there are going to be two more topshop opportunities before the Yorkdale launch in september (info here). i still plan on posting glee, but it won't be as awesome as you hoped for.

hiatus con't

i have already received some lovely feedback on the skirt i wore yesterday. i'm going to share more photos from the sesh in this post and tell you what i'm wearings.

shirt: ricki's / skirt: second hand, customized / jacket: H&M conscious collection / hat: winners
bag: second hand / shoes: belong to my mom

what i did with the skirt to "customize" it:
well firstly there are two layers. i wanted to have the inside layer significantly short, but i didn't want to cut it, so i wore a belt between the layers and pulled the extra fabric over it (like you would a shirt/dress).
after that, i wanted the top layer to be shorter and asymmetrical so i put knots in the fabric in various places.
(note: the knots were removed in some shots).

over the next few days i will do a post for the glee concert.

hiatus

i'm back in hamitlon, this week atleast, because the government is making it difficult for me to work for free (where the heck is my osap money!?) so i am on hiatus. gone back home to my parents' place where my cost of living is slightly lower, plus i can pick up some extra shifts at work. hopefully the extra cash there will tide me over until i figure this shit out. on the bright side, now i have alot of free time and access to my more fuller closet (see this post) and i can start posting more looks. i definitely plan to lay in the sun and read as well. and get some exercise!

this morning i got up real early and i thought "hey, i bet the people outside right now are the dog walkers. i'm gonna take some photos!" so i walked down to the park and played around. and sure enough, i did catch a dog and his human in my photos! here's just a little preview because i can't decide my faves yet.

tomorrow i'll post more of them so look forward to that. i've also been going on, and on, all over my twitter about the glee concert. and it has finally arrived. tonight is going to be super fun. we totally have the hook up, we're taking a limo (for FREE); there's eight of us going. and you better believe i'll be posting photos from the show!

CFDA Awards

i just finished reading what style.com had to share about the events that took place the other night. go here to read it yourself and get a feel for what the atmosphere was like. tommy ton took photos for them too and here are my faves:

of course lady gaga won fashion icon and wowed in a turquoise bob. i have to say between the hair, the train, and the height those shoes gave her she had a really mystical thing about her that i quite enjoyed. other-worldly. liya kebede looked like a goddess, so fresh and airy. i loved the contrast in sevigny's look when it came to both the black and white aspect, as well as the leather and eyelet combo; mixing hard and soft for a dangerous and feminine look. leelee's suit and this shot reminds me of jodie foster, upgraded. and what is there not to love about ms. harper's fantastic dress?

these photos are from MYDFBlog
